CROHN’S & COLITIS

AWARENESS WEEK

For so long, Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis were thought to be diseases that were unassociated with diverse patient communities. We know that to be false information. Many communities of color are impacted by these inflammatory bowel diseases – from the actual patient, to family members and friends.

IBD is unique to the individual, and our community members certainly have some great days, while other days require quite a bit of strength and management.

One of the largest IBD related hurdles that under-served communities face is receiving an accurate and timely diagnosis. Reducing time to diagnosis would not only provide an opportunity for patients to better understand what’s going on with their bodies, but also allow the disease to be diagnosed at a less severe state.

As we celebrate #InLivingCOGI during Crohn’s & Colitis Awareness Week, we invite you to join along and collaborate! Awareness week is a great opportunity to engage in conversations with healthcare providers, learn more about IBD and it’s connection to other chronic illnesses, and find ways to support your friends and family members who may be diagnosed with IBD.

We want to see a world where all IBD patients have an opportunity to hear, “You’re in remission!”

T Shirt Campaign

Support our fundraising through an In Living COGI T-Shirt

It’s critical to spread awareness about the signs and symptoms of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and conversation starters are just our thing. So grab a t-shirt and let’s start talking IBD!

As In Living COGI Week approaches, we encourage our community to get involved in any way that suits them, including grabbing a t-shirt to spark conversations! For every shirt purchased, a donation of $10 is made towards our overall goal of $20,000!

Understanding IBD

Understanding IBD

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is an umbrella term used to describe disorders that involve chronic inflammation of your digestive tract.

Types of IBD include:

Ulcerative Colitis

This condition involves inflammation and sores (ulcers) along the superficial lining of your large intestine (colon) and rectum.

Crohn’s disease

This type of IBD is characterized by inflammation of the lining of your digestive tract, which often can involve the deeper layers of the digestive tract.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease Unclassified (IBDU)

A diagnosis for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that can’t be classified as Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis.

WHY WE WALK

In 2024 we hosted an In Living COGI Step Challenge with over 50 participants who made a commitment to walk at least 10,000 steps in support of Crohn’s and Colitis Awareness Week. We walked over 700k steps during the week to show our community that we are committed to advocacy, including our own health.

Beyond our 5k events, the goal per person is to walk 10,000 steps during Crohn’s and Colitis Awareness Week which equates to 5 miles roughly. You do have the option to walk them over the course of those 7 days.

By joining the app, we’ll also be able to collect your steps and will have a running ticker counting them throughout the week. We look forward to you joining us!

RULES

  • Participants can walk by themselves or with a group in a designated space. Designated spaces can be a park, a trail, track field, a gym, or even your house, just to name some examples.
  • Participants are encouraged to join our In Living COGI 2025 5k and Beyond! Group on the Step Up App so your steps can be recorded. This also gives you the chance to connect with other community members and root for them during the walk.
