A Real Picture Of Health:
Reynelda Solitaire

“Prior to starting this advanced therapeutic drug, I was in a flare that was unable to be controlled with other drugs.”

Previous drugs prescribed to Reynelda were not as effective, unfortunately advancing her Ulcerative Colitis from a mild to moderate stage.

Having a provider that suggested advanced therapy options gave her the opportunity to learn more about potential medications that could reverse the stage she was in. Their trusted conversation gave her to autonomy to make an informed decision and was accessible because of her provider. And now she has achieved remission!

While there was some anxiety around her decision, their conversations are proof positive that patient-centered care allows patients to feel more involved in their care.

As Reynelda believes, “Everyone deserves to feel well and have an opportunity to get to a state of remission.”

Advanced Therapies

Evidence has shown that TNF inhibitors may be less effective in certain populations, particularly Black patients with IBD. A study published in Oxford Academic highlighted that Black IBD patients on anti-TNF therapy experienced higher rates of active disease and hospitalizations compared to their White counterparts. This underscores the urgent need to eliminate barriers to advanced therapeutic options like JAK inhibitors, which offer unique benefits, including oral administration, improved efficacy for certain patient populations, and reduced delays in achieving adequate disease management.

At COGI, we recognize the profound physical, mental, and financial toll of digestive diseases on patients and their families. Restrictive policies that hinder access to innovative treatments exacerbate these burdens, particularly for historically marginalized communities that already face healthcare inequities.

Patients living with chronic illnesses deserve timely access to therapies that best meet their individual needs. Decisions about the risks and benefits of treatments should remain within the physician-patient partnership, informed by the patient’s unique health circumstances.

Innovation in treatment is essential to improving quality of life for patients with digestive diseases.
