COGI had the incredible opportunity to represent our community at the DDNC Public Policy Forum, where we engaged in vital discussions surrounding healthcare and policy advocacy. It was truly inspiring to be among individuals dedicated to advancing medical research, treatment development, and patient care.
What is the DDNC?
The Digestive Disease National Coalition (DDNC) is a dynamic coalition focused on elevating awareness and policy initiatives related to digestive diseases. It serves as a powerful platform for collaboration, allowing us to unite our voices in advocating for meaningful change that improves patients’ lives.
A Day of Advocacy on Capitol Hill
Following our informative discussions at the forum, we took our advocacy efforts to Capitol Hill! It was empowering to communicate the urgent need for increased funding for crucial programs. Some key issues we tackled included:
- Funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH): We advocated for enhanced support for vital research initiatives that pave the way for innovative treatments.
- The CDC and Cancer Prevention: Highlighting the importance of the Chronic Disease Education and Awareness (CDEA) program to promote better health outcomes for patients.
- Veterans’ Health: Emphasizing the significance of the VA Medical and Prosthetic Research Program to ensure our veterans receive the care they deserve.
Addressing Cost-Shifting Tactics
We also confronted critical concerns regarding cost-shifting tactics imposed by payers, which often lead to higher costs for patients:
- Utilization Management Tactics: Discussions on techniques such as prior authorization, step therapy, co-pay accumulators, and non-medical switching highlighted their negative impact on patient access to care.
- Safe Step Act: The bipartisan bill that seeks to establish guidelines for appealing step therapy protocols was a significant focus, and we urged legislators to prioritize its passage in the 119th Congress.
- HELP Copays Act: This important act requires health plans to count co-pay assistance toward patient cost-sharing, helping to alleviate financial burdens on patients.
Promoting Essential Legislation
We also highlighted critical legislation aimed at improving patient care:
- Treat and Reduce Obesity Act: Expanding Medicare coverage for obesity treatments and behavioral therapy to improve health outcomes.
- Medical Nutrition Therapy Act: Ensuring better access to dietitian services for various conditions.
- Liver Illness Visibility, Education, and Research Bill: Aiming to enhance visibility and research for liver diseases like NASH.
- Food Labeling Modernization Act: Strengthening nutrient labeling requirements and mandating clear allergen disclosures to safeguard consumers.
COGI is fully committed to this mission!
Thank you to everyone involved for making this experience possible. Together, we can make a real difference in health policy advocacy. Let’s continue to unite our efforts, raise our voices, and drive change for better healthcare for all!
