Redefining Life: Finding Strength and Embracing Life With an Ostomy

By Richelle Hines

I was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease at age 7.

Having Crohn’s disease can be a challenging and life-altering experience but being diagnosed so young was especially difficult both for my family and myself. When the doctor explained that I had Crohn’s, I felt confused and scared as any child would. Crohn’s, a type of inflammatory bowel disease, often manifests with symptoms like abdominal pain, diarrhea, and fatigue, which can significantly impact one’s life.

After years of medications, doctors’ appointments, scans, x-rays, and treatments, I had surgery to place my ileostomy in March of 1994.  I did not have time to prepare for the surgery as I went in through the emergency room and was found to be so sick, I needed emergency surgery. My surgery came just as I was starting to navigate the complexities of adolescence and high school, a time already filled with uncertainty.

Life with an ostomy can be a significant adjustment for anyone, but so is Crohn’s Disease.  With Crohn’s comes the unpredictability of flare-ups — which can make it difficult to maintain a normal routine, school, social interactions, and overall quality of life. Initially thought to be a temporary adjustment, my ostomy was made permanent in February of 2001. Although I had had my ileostomy for almost 7 years, facing the reality of living with a permanent ileostomy felt overwhelming, as I struggled with the implications for my daily life and self-image.

Despite the initial feelings of anxiety and stigma, I have come to live a life I never thought I could. I returned to school, rekindled friendships, met new friends, traveled and I am now healthy and truly enjoying life. I love to laugh and will catch a comedy show every chance I get. My all-time favorite comedian is Katt Williams (Katt, if you’re reading this we need to meet). I love to eat, something that was often a challenge prior to my surgery. I do not even think I have a favorite food anymore, but I do love a good biscuit (I’m a Southern Belle at heart). I value my gym time (it is therapeutic for me).

I currently work as a nurse and because of my extensive and often complicated health history I can be empathetic towards my patients. Adversities, whether they be health issues, loss, or life transitions, often force us to confront our limits and rethink our perspectives. For example, I never wanted to work in healthcare and even wonder how much longer I want to do it, but I do believe there is purpose in my placement. If I can uplift one person or be the reason someone laughs, my work is not in vain.

Overcoming obstacles can deepen our empathy and allow us to connect with others who may be facing similar challenges.  I enjoy sharing lighthearted moments and laughs with my patients because I do believe laughter is healthy and good for the soul.  Many years have passed since my initial surgery. I can say the fear, anxiety, and stigma has started to transform into empowerment as I have been able to connect with other ostomates in the community who have shared similar paths. When we face difficulties, we often discover inner strengths we did not know we possessed, like determination and adaptability.

Life with an ostomy can present both challenges and opportunities for personal growth. However, the key word in that statement is LIFE and having an ostomy has allowed me to live a healthy and fulfilled LIFE that I would not have been able to do without her (my ostomy) by my side. Living with an ostomy has taught me that resilience is born from challenges.  What once felt like a limitation has been transformed into a powerful source of strength. Embracing this part of my journey has fostered a deeper appreciation for life. I see each day as an opportunity and reminder that, despite the hurdles, I can thrive and inspire others to do the same.
